The board

Read the planning board: the tray of jobs to place, a row per machine, bars for steps, colours, and the job panel.

The board is the Schedule's main page: the tray of jobs to place on the left, a row for every machine across the middle, and the selected job's panel on the right. Everyone on the team can see it; who can change the plan is a setting. On a phone the board opens the Today view instead.

The chips at the top count the jobs that are late, at risk and ready to place. A job in the tray or on hold whose due date has passed counts as late too, as it does in the placing preview and on the Today view. Click one to show only those jobs, and again to show everything. Place all ready opens the placing preview (see Placing and re-planning). The Live dot shows how long ago the board last updated. The ⋯ menu opens Today (phone view), the Setup pages and Compact lanes.

The toolbar moves in time and changes the view:

  • Today, ‹ and › move a day at a time; click the date to jump to another. While now is in view the date is today's; at Week zoom it shows the days in view.
  • Shift, Day and Week zoom (keys 1, 2, 3). Shift shows 8 hours with a 15-minute grid.
  • Compress and Colour are described below.
  • Filter narrows the board to some departments, one customer, or Only steps waiting on a check. Find (⌘ K or /) jumps to a job or a machine.
  • Undo and Redo take back your last changes to the plan (see Placing and re-planning).
  • Auto-schedule places every ready job after a preview; its menu has Place all ready.

The tray#

The tray holds the jobs that aren't on the board yet, sorted by due date (or by priority, customer or date added).

It has four sections:

  • Ready: every ready check passes. Place puts one job on the board. While Schedule settings is on, a job whose open checks all have an expected date is here too, marked "Planned from the expected dates".
  • Waiting: at least one check is still open. The section header counts the reasons ("Proof 2 · Stock 1"). It is open while no job is ready, and folds away once one is.
  • On hold: jobs a planner parked.
  • Imposed, not on the schedule, with Add and Add all: imposed jobs with a selected layout that aren't in the Schedule yet, for example when your team doesn't add them automatically (see Schedule settings). A finished job doesn't come back here: send a reprint with Put on the schedule in Imposition.

Place all at the top of the Ready section places every ready job, as Place all ready does.

A card shows the job's name and number, its due date ("Thu 17:00 · 2 d", amber when less than a working day is left, red when overdue), the customer, quantity and run type, and its route with each step's machine and time: "Plates 20m › Press 1 2h10 › Guillotine 45m". A step that has no machine yet shows a warning ("No machine for Fold"). Each open check you tick by hand (Stock, Die, Plates or your own) has its own button on the card: tap Stock when the stock is in, without opening the job. A job already on the board comes back to the tray when one of its steps is off the board, for example a step added later, so Place can put that step on a machine too. The card's ⋯ menu has Hold, Remove from schedule and Open in Imposition. An empty tray says "All caught up."

Machines and time#

Machines are grouped by department (Prepress, Print, Cutting, Finishing, Shipping, Outside), in the same order as on Setup; click a department to fold it. Each machine's name shows a dot for what it is doing (running, makeready, down or idle), its current job (or, while it is down, "Down · back 10:30") and how busy it is over the time you're looking at ("82 %"): the working time booked on it in view, a running step up to now at least, out of its working time in view. A machine that doesn't work at all in view shows "—". The tablet icon next to the name opens the machine's station.

The time runs left to right, with days on top and hours below. The now line shows the current time, and the past is slightly dimmed. Non-working time is hatched grey, maintenance has warning stripes with a wrench, a breakdown has red stripes with its expected end ("ETA 11:30"), and overtime is lightly tinted.

Compress nights#

Compress (key N, on by default at Day and Week zoom) shrinks non-working time to a thin band with a moon, so a weekend doesn't push Monday off the screen. Late jobs always say how late they are in working hours as well as clock time ("2.5 working h late · 18 h").

Bars#

Each step is a bar on its machine's row, from its planned start to its planned end:

  • the striped start of a bar is makeready; a lighter part of it is the extra makeready this job needs after the one before (hover for the minutes);
  • the solid part is the run;
  • a dotted line after a bar is a wait before the next step, such as drying ("dry 2 h");
  • icons at the right end show the ready checks and a dot for the job's late risk;
  • ≈ marks an approximate time, a pin a pinned step and a link a step that fills a gap;
  • a late bar has a red striped tail past its due date and a chip such as "+3 h"; a step running over its time has red stripes past its planned end; a red outline marks a conflict.

Hover a bar for its details: the machine, start and end, setup and run, quantity, due date and spare time.

Colours#

Colour (key C) switches between Status, Customer, Due risk, Ink & stock and Job. By customer, every customer keeps the same colour everywhere, and a gang run with several customers has a striped edge in each of their colours. Ink & stock gives similar work the same colour, so you can see where makeready is saved. Colour is never the only signal: every status also has its own pattern or icon.

Step statusWhat it means
WaitingA ready check or an earlier step isn't done yet.
ReadyNothing holds it back: it starts when its machine is free.
MakereadyThe operator is making the machine ready (when your team tracks makeready).
RunningRunning on its machine.
PausedStopped for a while, with a reason. It carries on where it stopped.
ProblemThe operator reported a problem. It waits until someone resolves it.
DoneFinished, with the good quantity recorded.
SkippedA planner skipped it. It takes no time.

The job panel#

Click a bar or a card to select the job. Its other steps are highlighted and joined by lines, everything else fades, and the job's due date shows as a flag.

The panel on the right shows:

  • the job's name, number and customer, its due date with the time to spare, its priority and its late risk, and Open in Imposition;
  • a picture of the imposed sheet, with its sheets, forms, plates and pieces;
  • Route: every step with its status, its machine (the list shows every machine that can take it, with its finish time, and the machines that can't, with the reason), its planned and actual times, and its makeready and run in working time (what is left of it on a started step) with where the time comes from. A step with a problem has Problem solved, as on the station;
  • Ready checks: see Ready checks;
  • Activity: the job's plan changes and what happened on the floor.

Hold and Release park a job and bring it back; Remove from schedule takes it off (the imposition job isn't touched). A job whose layout changed after production started shows a banner that says so.

Live updates and the status bar#

The board checks for changes every 5 seconds while it is open, and the now line and running bars move every second between checks. After two failed checks the Live dot turns amber and says Reconnecting…. The status bar at the bottom counts the jobs, late and at-risk jobs and conflicts, names the busiest machine today and shows the last change and who made it.
