Before a run starts, the workspace checks the job and lists warnings above the layout. Click a warning that names an artwork to select it. Most problems are fixed on the artwork or in the media.
A run won't start#
| Message | Cause and fix |
|---|---|
| "Add artwork first." / "No artwork has a usable shape yet." | Add artwork, or give it a shape (below). |
| "… has no shape: pick a die path or another shape mode." | The file has no die the app can use. Open the artwork and choose its die, or set Shape to Trim box, Custom size or Pixel contour. |
| "No die: map an ink or path to Cut, tick the paths of the die, or use the trim box." (on the artwork) | The artwork is set to Die path but nothing in the file is mapped to Cut. Press Open artwork and map the die's ink or paths to Cut, or set Shape to Trim box. |
| "… is larger than the printable area." | The piece, with its bleed, doesn't fit inside the margins at any angle it may take. Use bigger media, smaller margins, or allow more rotation. The other artworks still run. |
| "No artwork can be nested." | Every artwork has one of the two problems above. |
| "N-up needs rectangular pieces: …" | N-up cuts rectangles only. Use True shape, or give those artworks a rectangular shape. |
| "N-up needs sheets." / "Offset runs need sheets." | Rolls nest with True shape or Strips, digitally. |
| "Mixed strips need rectangular pieces: …" | Use One item per strip, or True shape. |
| "Strips can't keep pieces within the cutter's beds yet …" | On a roll kept within beds, use True shape, or let parts span beds. |
| "Offset runs take at most 40 artworks (… here)." | Split the job, or run it digitally. |
| "Set the roll width." | A roll job needs its width. |
| "A run is already in progress." | Wait for it, or press Stop. |
Settings messages ("Must be …") are on Settings reference.
Warnings that don't stop a run#
- "N-up turns pieces by quarter turns only: … is placed at 0°." (Strips say the same for rectangles.) The artwork allows only angles that aren't quarter turns.
- "…: its grain leaves no allowed rotation; it is placed at 90°." The artwork's grain and the media grain leave none of its angles, so it is placed at the angle that matches the grain.
- "Offset: … artworks with True shape may take a while; allow at least 30 s."
- "No dieline found: nested by its trim box. …" (on the artwork) A PDF added with Die path had no die, so it's nested by its trim box. Map its die in the 1-up editor if it has a shaped outline.
Pieces are unplaced#
A layout with unplaced pieces shows a red badge, and the Parts tab lists the pieces. Common causes: Max sheets too low, a short time budget on a large job, or pieces that only fit at angles they aren't allowed. Give the run more Time (up to 600 seconds), raise Max sheets, or place them by hand in Edit mode (see Viewing and editing a layout). Layouts with fewer unplaced pieces always rank first.
Offset: no plan within the caps#
An offset run that can't meet the overrun and underrun caps finishes with a note instead of layouts:
- "No plan within 10 % overrun on 3 plates; try 4 plates or allow more overrun." Raise Max plates or Overrun %, or allow some Underrun %.
- "… does not fit the press sheet in any allowed orientation." That artwork can't go on any plate.
- "The plates found could not be checked within the time limit; allow more time."
See Offset press runs.
Layouts are out of date#
After you change the media or an artwork, earlier layouts show Out of date: run again. They stay visible for comparison, but can't be edited or exported ("The job changed since this layout was nested. Run again to export it."). Run again. Changing only the method, its settings or the time budget keeps layouts current. So does changing the equipment, except on a roll where the new cutter changes the bed length or bed boundaries (see Sheets, rolls, margins and equipment).
Slow runs and stopping#
A run works for its Time budget (1 to 600 seconds, 30 by default) and lists layouts as it finds them. Stop
(or ⌘↵) ends it early and keeps every layout found so far; the status then reads "Stopped". Leaving the page
doesn't stop a run.
A run failed#
- "No layout found." The search ended without a layout: check the warnings, and give it more time.
- "The run stopped unexpectedly …" or "No nesting worker picked up the run …": the background service that runs nests restarted or isn't running. Run again; if it keeps happening, contact your administrator.
- A message about a setting, such as a value out of range, is shown as it is: fix the setting and run again.
