Dieline files

The dieline PDF, artwork template, DXF, CF2 and SVG: spot and layer names, the embedded definition, and why the same box gives the same file.

The dieline PDF#

For the die maker or a cutting table. Cut lines are stroked in the spot colour Thru-cut, creases in Crease, perforations in Perforate and scores in Score, each also on a layer of the same name, so cutting-table software maps them without manual work. The outline is one closed path; slits and other inner cuts are separate open lines. The page is the blank plus a quarter inch on every side, and the trim box is the blank. The file's title names the style's code, the size and whether the size is inside, crease or outside.

The file carries its own definition as an attachment named dieline.json: the style, size, board and options. Open it again in the Box designer and you get the same box; the 3D viewer reads its folds.

Two dielines made from the same definition are byte for byte identical, so saving the same box twice doesn't make a second copy.

The dieline PDF, DXF and CF2 are only made for a size that passes the fold check. If it fails, the download explains why; the template and the preview still work, and the box can still be quoted.

The artwork template#

For your designer: the same lines plus three layers that never cut:

  • Bleed: the outline grown by 3 mm (and windows shrunk by the same), where artwork should run to.
  • Glue: the glue areas on the printed side, tinted and hatched, that must stay free of ink and varnish. Glue areas on the inside are outlined only.
  • Info: each panel's name turned the way its artwork reads, "Glue: no ink" on the glue areas, the grain (or flute) direction, and a title block with the style, size, board, caliper and generator version. Beta styles say so.

Don't send the template to a cutter; send the dieline PDF.

DXF and CF2#

DXF and CF2 are in millimetres and carry only the cutting layers: in DXF one layer per spot name above. In CF2, cuts are line type 1, creases and scores 2 and perforations 3, as ArtiosCAD reads them; nothing else is ever written as a cut.

SVG#

The SVG download is the flat blank as a picture: black cut lines, red dashed creases and dotted perforations, at full size in millimetres. Use it in presentations or to check a size by eye, not for cutting.

CAD dieline boxes#

A box that uses a CAD dieline (see Cartons and boxes) downloads its stored single-up, never a redrawn one: the PDF, DXF and CF2 carry its cutting, creasing, perforating and scoring lines under the same spot, layer and line-type names as above, in its own frame. It has no artwork template and no fold check, since nothing is generated. Original gives the die file it was read from, as it came in.

Save to Files#

Save to Files stores the dieline PDF with its style, size, board and generator as properties you can filter by. Saving the same line of an estimate again adds a new version of its file. It appears once your team's Files library supports it.
