Some findings come with a fix: a change preflight makes to a copy of the file for you. The original file is never changed. Findings that have one show a button with the fix's name, and the report's Fixes section lists every fix it offers.
| Fix | What it does | Offered by |
|---|---|---|
| Set page boxes | Sets the TrimBox of every page (the die outline on the page with the die, else the TrimBox or the visible page) and a BleedBox the profile's bleed beyond it, within the page. | Bleed |
| Remove comments, forms and scripts | Removes links, scripts and form logic. Comments and form fields set to print are merged into the page; the others are removed. | JavaScript, Comments and form fields |
| Remove encryption | Saves the file without encryption or permission limits. | Encryption |
| Downsample images | Resamples colour and gray images above the profile's Flag above resolution down to Warn below, keeping each image's compression. 1-bit images are left alone. | Image resolution |
Apply a fix#
Click the fix. A dialog says what it will do to this file, such as "Trim 210 × 297 mm from the TrimBox, and a BleedBox 3.2 mm beyond it within the page.", and what happens to the result. Press Apply fix.
- An approval artwork gets the fixed file as its next version, noted "Preflight fix: Set page boxes", and the new version is preflighted again with the same profile. The report of the new version opens with a message such as "Fixed file saved as version 3." Earlier versions are kept. In Files, the fixed PDF is the next version of the artwork's file, marked Preflight fixup (see Proofs and Files).
- A file in Files (including a PDF you uploaded on the Preflight page) gets the fixed file as its next version, marked Preflight fixup and noted "Preflight fix: Set page boxes". The new version is preflighted again with the same profile, and its report opens with "Fixed file saved in Files as v2." The version that was checked is kept, and the fixed file counts toward your storage like any other version.
- An imposition artwork gets a corrected copy to download, named after the file with
-fixed. Upload it where you need it.
Only the latest version of an artwork can be fixed ("A newer version of this artwork exists. Fix that version instead."), or the current version of a file in Files ("A newer version of this file is in Files. Fix that version instead."), and only while its file is the one the report checked ("The file changed after this report. Run preflight again first."). A file in the Files trash can't be fixed until it is restored. Apply one fix at a time and fix the new version for the next one.
Set page boxes#
Set page boxes sets the TrimBox and BleedBox of every page:
- the TrimBox is the bounding box of the die outline on the page that has the die (the first page of an approval file, or the page an imposition artwork uses); on the other pages it is their TrimBox, else the visible page;
- the BleedBox is the TrimBox plus the profile's Bleed setting all round, cut to the page (MediaBox).
It is offered for a missing TrimBox, boxes beyond the page, a BleedBox smaller than the TrimBox, and artwork that has bleed but a BleedBox that doesn't show it. It doesn't add bleed to artwork that stops short: add that in the design or in the 1-up editor.
Remove comments, forms and scripts#
Remove comments, forms and scripts removes what a print file shouldn't carry: links, page and document actions, JavaScript and form logic. Comments and form fields set to print are merged into the page, because removing them would change what prints; the others are removed. It is offered for JavaScript, comments or markup, and form fields.
Remove encryption#
Remove encryption saves the file without encryption or permission limits. It works on files that open without a password; a file that needs a password can't be checked, or fixed, until it is saved without one.
Downsample images#
Downsample images resamples colour and grayscale images above the profile's Flag above resolution down to Warn below, keeping each image's compression, so lossless images stay lossless. 1-bit images are left as they are. It is offered on images flagged as above Flag above, which only the Offset commercial preset sets (900 ppi), or a profile that sets it.
Limits#
- A fix works on files up to 250 MB, and Downsample images up to 80 MB.
- It stops after two minutes: "The fix took too long and was stopped."
- Downsample images can't resample an image larger than about 1 GB once decoded: "An image in this file is too large to resample here. Resample it where it was made."
- You can apply up to 10 fixes a minute.
The 1-up editor's Fix: overprint technical inks is not a preflight fix: it turns on a setting of the editor (see Colour and ink checks).
