White ink and varnish: 10 checks for a clearer proof
Review technical finishing layers deliberately instead of assuming the composite image tells the whole story.
White ink and varnish can be easy to miss in a normal composite preview. Their effect depends on the substrate, coverage and production method. Review the layer definitions and the intended appearance together.
- Correct ink names. Confirm that the file uses the names expected by the production workflow.
- Complete coverage. Inspect the areas where white or varnish should appear.
- Unwanted coverage. Look for masks extending into clear windows, glue areas or technical marks.
- Small details. Check narrow gaps and fine shapes against the process capability.
- Alignment. Compare the mask with the printed artwork at the relevant edges.
- Overprint behavior. Inspect the rendered output rather than relying on the object's apparent color.
- Substrate assumptions. Distinguish opaque, clear and reflective materials when reviewing appearance.
- Layer classification. Keep finishing inks distinct from ordinary process artwork and cut lines.
- Version consistency. Ensure that the finish mask changed when the underlying artwork changed.
- Production confirmation. Check the final separation and output requirements with the operator.
Use the appropriate view
Separation inspection helps identify exactly where an ink appears. A supported 3D material or finish view helps communicate the visual intent on the package. Use both where they answer different questions.
AutomatePrint includes separation inspection and finish controls for supported 3D workflows. Keep a physical sample or production test in the process when appearance, adhesion or registration needs confirmation.
Write a specific review request
Tell the reviewer which areas are meant to receive the finish. “Check the varnish on the logo and the clear window” is more useful than asking them to approve a general preview without context.
