10 things to inspect in a 3D packaging proof

Review panels, folds, orientation and finishes with a checklist that makes a 3D proof useful to production.

A 3D proof helps people understand how flat artwork wraps around a package. Its value comes from the questions it helps answer. Rotate the model deliberately and inspect the following ten details before you sign off the design.

  1. Front-panel orientation. Confirm that the main panel faces the intended direction when the package is standing.
  2. Panel transitions. Follow images and background colors across folds to find awkward breaks or alignment errors.
  3. Top and bottom panels. Read them in the orientation a customer will encounter.
  4. Side-panel copy. Check whether narrow panels keep text readable and clear of folds.
  5. Barcodes and critical information. Inspect placement, orientation and distance from edges; complete any required production checks separately.
  6. Glue areas. Confirm which sections are hidden and whether artwork or important copy lands there.
  7. Inside and outside faces. Make sure each printed side is represented correctly.
  8. Material appearance. Select a material that supports the review, especially when comparing opaque and reflective surfaces.
  9. Finishing coverage. Inspect the shape and placement of foil, varnish or other supported finish masks.
  10. The approved version. Confirm that the model uses the artwork version under review.

Use 2D and 3D together

Keep the flat proof available for detailed text and separation inspection. Use the 3D view to understand the folded result. Neither view alone answers every production question.

A digital model is also different from a physical sample. Board behavior, glue performance, product fit and manufacturing tolerances need the appropriate structural and production checks.

In AutomatePrint, prepare the structure and artwork, inspect the model and use a supported 3D proof to share the result with reviewers. Give them a short list of the panels or finishes that need attention.
