Top 5 tools for production marks and print job identification

Compare tools for registration marks, job codes and repeatable sheet information that operators can use.

A production mark should do a job. It may identify an order, guide a cutter, show where to trim or tell an operator which sheet is in front of them. Copying marks by hand invites small errors that only become visible when the sheet reaches the next machine. Reusable rules make the process easier to repeat.

How we chose these five

We considered mark placement, job information, layout changes and the relationship to downstream equipment. This is AutomatePrint’s editorial shortlist, with our own product first for shops that want a connected production workflow.

1. AutomatePrint

AutomatePrint puts mark sets inside the production workflow. A set can include registration marks, text, barcodes, crop marks and other sheet information, with placement rules and values drawn from job data. Equipment and team defaults help the operator start with the right setup. It is our first pick when marks need to follow the order and layout instead of being recreated on each PDF. The result is a more consistent handoff between artwork preparation, printing and cutting.

2. Esko Dynamic Marks

Esko Dynamic Marks adds dynamic printer marks through the Esko Illustrator workflow. Consider it when Illustrator and DeskPack are already part of production. Change the job information and layout during the demo to see how the marks behave under revision.

3. Enfocus Griffin

Enfocus Griffin includes production marks alongside nesting and cut-path preparation. It is a relevant option for sign and print work that needs layout and output preparation together. Ask to see the exact registration arrangement required by your cutting workflow.

4. Quite Imposing

Quite Imposing provides imposition functions in Acrobat, including crop-mark handling. It belongs on the shortlist for straightforward PDF assembly and finishing preparation. Check the relevant mark controls against the work you actually produce, rather than assuming all marks are interchangeable.

5. KODAK PREPS

KODAK PREPS includes marks as part of its imposition environment. It is worth considering for production teams that want marks governed by established imposition layouts. Use a job with several sheets so identification and positioning can be checked across the complete output.

Put the shortlist to work

Create one job with a visible order ID, sheet number, crop marks and the cutter’s required registration marks. Change its quantity and sheet size, then export again. Scan the code on the printed sample and check clearances around the artwork. Include the operator who loads the cutting job; a readable code in a PDF is not the same as a reliable shop-floor handoff.

Can any registration mark work with any cutter?

No. Match the shape, size, placement and clear space to the equipment requirements. A reusable mark set helps preserve a verified setup, but the first job still needs a practical output check.
