3D proofs for folding cartons: what to check before you approve
A flat PDF tells a reviewer what is printed. It does not show which way the copy reads on the top flap, or whether the barcode lands on a glue flap. A 3D proof does.
Most carton approvals still happen on a flat PDF. The reviewer sees every panel at once, laid out as the die cuts them, and has to imagine the box. That works for an experienced packaging buyer. For everyone else it hides the questions that matter once the carton is folded and on a shelf.
What a flat proof hides
On a flat layout the panels sit next to each other in the order the die is drawn, not in the order a shopper sees them. Text on a tuck flap is printed upside down relative to the front, because the flap folds over. The glue flap carries no ink but sits right beside the back panel. A dust flap that looks generous on the sheet disappears inside the carton.
A folded 3D proof puts each panel where it ends up. The reviewer turns the carton, looks at the top, opens the lid and sees the back the way the shelf does.
Five things to check on the folded carton
- Orientation. The front, the top and the tuck read the right way up when the carton stands.
- Panel edges. Logos and type don't wrap round a crease where they shouldn't, and continuous artwork lines up across the corners.
- Hidden areas. Nothing important is on a glue flap, a dust flap or under a tuck.
- Codes and legal copy. The barcode, the batch area and the ingredients sit on flat panels that stay visible.
- Finishes. Foil, spot UV and emboss are where the brand expects them, and nowhere near a crease.
Build the proof from the real die
A 3D proof is only useful if it folds from the dieline that will be cut. In AutomatePrint the carton folds from the die in the artwork itself: the cut and crease lines are mapped from their spot colors in the 1-up editor, or drawn by the Box designer for a standard style. The board you print on sets the thickness at each fold, so flaps stack the way they will on the line.
Share it behind the same link
The 3D view is shared from the same proof link as the flat PDF. Reviewers turn the carton, fold it flat and back, and pin comments that stay on their panel as it folds. They don't need an account, and the decision record notes that they opened the 3D view.
