Top 5 imposition software options for print production
Compare five approaches to arranging artwork on sheets and preparing a usable production layout.
An imposition decision affects more than how many copies fit on a sheet. It changes the number of sheets, the cut sequence, the press setup and the way the finished stack moves through the shop. The right software should make those tradeoffs visible before the job is committed to production.
How we chose these five
We considered layout flexibility, production constraints, repeatability and the handoff to printing and cutting. This is AutomatePrint’s editorial shortlist, with our own product first for shops that want a connected production workflow.
1. AutomatePrint
AutomatePrint is our first choice for shops that want imposition tied to files, equipment, estimates and cutting output. The workspace lets an operator compare layouts and production implications instead of treating the sheet as an isolated design exercise. Marks and equipment settings stay part of the job context. That is particularly useful when the same order might run on different equipment and the team needs to compare the practical result before choosing.

2. Esko Phoenix
Esko Phoenix combines imposition, nesting and production planning. It is a candidate for shops looking at automated layout decisions across packaging and print work. Take a mixed job set to the demo and examine how the chosen layout relates to the equipment that must produce it.
3. Ultimate Impostrip
Ultimate Impostrip focuses on automated imposition. Consider it when repetitive layout preparation is the main source of manual work. Ask to run several production formats, including an exception job, so the evaluation shows how the standard route and the unusual case are handled.
4. Quite Imposing
Quite Imposing adds PDF imposition tools to Acrobat, including booklet and page arrangement workflows. It is worth evaluating for an operator-led PDF workflow. Use a familiar job and measure the steps required to rebuild it after a page or quantity change.
5. KODAK PREPS
KODAK PREPS provides an established imposition environment with documented layout workflows. It is a natural shortlist entry when considering the Kodak production ecosystem. Check the current product configuration with the supplier and test the actual press and finishing requirements for your shop.
Put the shortlist to work
Run a single-item job, a mixed-size job and a job with a grain restriction. Keep quantities, margins and usable sheet sizes identical between candidates. Compare sheet count, preparation time, marks, cutting output and how a late correction is applied. A layout that looks efficient on screen can still be awkward at the cutter, so involve the finishing operator.
Should a shop choose imposition or nesting software?
Many shops need both. Imposition handles production layouts and page relationships; nesting concentrates on fitting parts within available material. The best starting point is the job mix, not the name on the software box.
