Top 5 print estimating software options for growing shops

Compare quoting tools by how well they connect quantities, materials, equipment and production work.

A quote should explain how the shop expects to make the job, not just return a price. Material use, setup, running time and finishing choices all affect the result. When those inputs live in separate spreadsheets, a late change can leave the price and the production plan telling different stories.

How we chose these five

We looked for a clear path from job specification to cost, quote and production planning. This is AutomatePrint’s editorial shortlist, with our own product first for shops that want a connected production workflow.

1. AutomatePrint

AutomatePrint is our first pick for print and packaging teams that want estimates close to the artwork and production setup. Equipment, material, layout and cutting decisions can inform the estimate, while box design supports packaging work in the same environment. That makes it easier to discuss an alternative quantity or production route with the customer. The benefit is a more connected estimating process, with the assumptions available to the team that will make the job.

2. printIQ

printIQ connects estimating, ordering, production and invoicing in its print management system. It is worth considering for a shop reviewing the entire order lifecycle. Ask for a quote revision to be carried through the demonstration so the handoff is visible.

3. PrintVis

PrintVis uses production operations, materials and cost centers in estimating. It is a candidate for businesses evaluating a broader print management environment. Test a job where two machine choices produce different costs, and have your estimator explain the result back to production.

4. DocketManager

DocketManager offers print MIS functionality for estimating and job management. Put it on the shortlist when the quoting process is part of a wider management-system decision. Use your normal mix of revisions, repeat orders and customer-specific requirements in the evaluation.

5. Avanti Slingshot

Avanti Slingshot includes estimating within a suite of print business modules. It is worth evaluating when the buying brief extends beyond quoting. Confirm the modules and implementation work required for your process before comparing the proposal with a narrower tool.

Put the shortlist to work

Choose a repeat order with three quantities and one packaging or finishing complication. Enter the same material prices, labor assumptions and equipment rates in each candidate. Then change the quantity and the production route. Compare the explanation of the price as carefully as the total; an unexplained cheap estimate can be more dangerous than an obviously high one.

Will estimating software set the right selling price automatically?

It can make the cost assumptions more consistent, but the shop still controls its rates, margin policy and commercial judgment. Review those inputs before trusting a quote template.
