10 safeguards for a reliable print-software integration

Keep automated jobs traceable when files change, requests fail or background processing takes time.

A production integration needs to handle the normal path and the interrupted one. Build these safeguards before a script becomes responsible for customer artwork or a machine-ready output.

  1. Stable job references. Keep the external order reference alongside returned object identifiers.
  2. Team scoping. Ensure every request runs in the intended workspace.
  3. Private credentials. Store API keys outside source files and rotate them when access changes.
  4. Input validation. Check dimensions, quantities and required properties before submitting work.
  5. Version tracking. Record the exact file version used at each stage.
  6. Background status checks. Wait for processing to finish before using its result.
  7. Controlled retries. Determine whether the first request created something before repeating it.
  8. Approval checks. Read the decision for the intended artwork version before releasing production.
  9. Output verification. Confirm that expected files exist and belong to the selected plan.
  10. Visible exceptions. Give an operator a useful error and a safe recovery action.

Test interruptions deliberately

Use a generic job and simulate a missing field, a rejected upload and a timeout. Check that the integration stops at the correct step and can resume without duplicating artwork or sending another proof request unnecessarily.

AutomatePrint's API documentation describes supported operations and fields. Follow those contracts instead of depending on the browser interface.

Keep a human review point

Automation can remove repeated entry while leaving uncertain work for a person. A clear exception queue is often more useful than attempting to guess every production decision in code.

Review plan access before development: the Files API and broader workflow API have different requirements.
