10 checks before publishing the print production schedule
Make the schedule reflect approvals, materials, equipment and the work that must happen before each operation.
A full schedule is not necessarily a runnable schedule. Before releasing the day's plan, check whether each operation has the files, materials and predecessor work it needs. These checks help reduce the difference between a tidy board and a productive shift.
- Approved artwork. Confirm that the intended version is ready for production.
- Available material. Check the required stock and any purchasing or preparation dependency.
- Equipment fit. Match dimensions, material and process to a suitable machine.
- Predecessor operations. Keep cutting, folding and other steps after the work they depend on.
- Setup time. Allow for preparation when changing products, materials or machine settings.
- Shift availability. Use the hours the department can actually run.
- Downtime. Account for maintenance and known equipment interruptions.
- Quantity and duration. Check unusually short or long operations against the production plan.
- Delivery priority. Consider the remaining route, not only the next machine's queue.
- Operator handoff. Make the next action and job information easy to find.
Keep readiness visible
An operation waiting on a proof is different from one ready to run. AutomatePrint's scheduling workflow includes ready checks, machine information and station views so the team can distinguish those situations.
When a machine goes down or a job changes, review the affected route. Moving one block on a board may change when several later operations can start.
Close the feedback loop
Use actual production progress to improve future estimates. If the same setup consistently takes longer than planned, change the underlying assumption instead of repeatedly squeezing the schedule.
Start with one department and a small set of clear readiness rules. A schedule that operators trust is more valuable than a detailed plan built on unavailable files and optimistic durations.
