10 questions to ask when evaluating packaging software

Compare software against a complete packaging job, from structure and artwork through proofing and production.

Packaging software can cover structural design, artwork preparation, estimating, proofing or production planning. Before comparing feature lists, define which parts of the job your team needs to improve. Then walk through one representative package from start to finish.

  1. Which structures are supported? Check the box styles and imported drawing formats your shop uses.
  2. How are dimensions interpreted? Confirm units, internal or external sizing and board allowances.
  3. Can technical lines be classified? Test cuts, creases and other production geometry.
  4. How does artwork reach the structure? Inspect panel alignment and the revision process.
  5. What can reviewers inspect? Compare flat proofs, print separations and supported 3D views.
  6. How is approval recorded? Make sure decisions refer to the exact artwork version.
  7. Can the job be estimated? Review material, equipment and finishing assumptions.
  8. Can the layout be produced? Check grain, quantity, cutting method and export compatibility.
  9. How do people share work? Evaluate team access, file organization and handoffs between roles.
  10. What needs another tool? Identify specialist work that will remain in the existing production system.

Use a difficult example

A simple carton can make every demonstration look easy. Include a product with a real constraint: narrow panels, multiple variants, a directional board or a demanding finishing requirement.

AutomatePrint brings supported box design, artwork preparation, proofing, estimating and imposition into a shared workflow. A specialist structural or manufacturing application may still be appropriate for work outside those supported capabilities.

Score the handoffs

Measure the steps needed to move from the approved file to the selected production plan. Note where someone has to re-enter dimensions, rename files or interpret an earlier conversation. Those handoffs often matter as much as individual tool depth.
