10 things to compare before choosing an imposition layout
Look beyond sheet utilization when choosing a layout for the press, cutter and delivery quantity.
The densest layout is not always the lowest-cost production plan. A layout that saves one sheet but adds another setup or a difficult cutting sequence can cost more overall. Compare the complete route from stock to finished pieces.
- Ordered quantities. Confirm that every item reaches its required quantity and that any overrun is acceptable.
- Sheet or roll use. Compare the actual number of sheets or required roll length, not just a utilization percentage.
- Printable area. Check margins, gripper requirements and equipment limits.
- Rotation and grain. Confirm that the plan respects the direction needed for folding, strength or appearance.
- Bleed and spacing. Inspect neighboring shapes and edges, especially on mixed artwork.
- Cutting method. A free-form nest may suit a digital cutter while a guillotine needs a compatible separation sequence.
- Number of forms. More distinct forms can add setup and handling even when material use is lower.
- Print time. Use the intended production mode and realistic machine settings.
- Cut and handling time. Include registration, loading and finishing assumptions.
- Total cost. Compare the plan using the same stock rates, equipment costs and setup assumptions.
Use one job for the comparison
In AutomatePrint, create the job, add artwork and quantities, select the media and equipment, then run the appropriate method. The Report view brings sheet use, utilization, time and cost together so you can compare candidates on the same basis.
For a mixed label job, one candidate may use fewer sheets while another uses fewer forms. Review both before selecting a plan. Check the production view and exports as well as the headline result.
A time estimate is only as useful as the equipment data behind it. Compare estimates with completed jobs and adjust the settings as the shop learns.
